These are the Thoughts and Memories of
Erma E. McGuire

1. What or Who influenced you to join Zonta Club of St. Paul.
I was invited to join Zonta by Marjorie Neihart who had belonged many years. We had belonged to another organization and while we became friends we were also work associates.

2. What are a few of the most memorable events of Zonta Club of St. Paul that you participated in? Please elaborate with dates, places etc.
Three of the most significant events for me were the commissioning of the sculpture which stands in the plaza of the soon to be vacated Juvenile Detention Center in St. Paul. Another was the decision to build an authentic Tea House at the Como Park Conservatory. Through Evelyn McDonald our club sponsored a project of making solar ovens and teaching the women in the islands to use these as firewood is becoming very difficult to find. (My definition of service to the community is probably broader than most persons.)

3. How has Zonta Club Changed your life?
Zonta has focused my service commitments.

4. How has Zonta Club changed others?
Hopefully Zonta has been a meeting place for women across the professions who become friends and colleagues in service.

5. Have you held any office position at the Local, District, or International level? If so when and which one?
I have held the office of Secretary as well as headed the Service Committee and Membership Committee. I have served on the local board a number of times and have been a delgate to a number of International Conferences.

6. Have you attended any District or International Conventions? What are some memories of those you attended?
I have attended International Conferences in Toronto, Hong Kong, Helsinki, and St. Louis. The meeting of women from all over the world brings home the need to support women and to appreciate our likenesses and differences. I have attended District Meetings in the Twin Cities, Mankato and St. Cloud.

7. Do you have any pictures that would be of interest to others you could share? (Your pictures would be scanned and then returned to you)
There is a scrapbook of Zonta St. Paul somewhere. It was kept by Liz Keljik until she passed away. I might have a few pictures but most of them are "long" shots and not very conducive to the web site.

8. Are there any events that should be highlighted for our 76th anniversary year?
Yes, I believe that the 76th Anniversary year is a great time to honor our long term members. Lauraine Torgerson has belonged the most years followed by Edna Schwartz. A number of others have memberships which go back at least twenty years. I also think it would be nice to have a "past presidents" recognition event and the key role our first local president had in the formulation of Zonta as an international service organization.
