President's message:

Dear Sister Zontians,

As we begin this new year, I want to thank each board member and committee member for stepping forward to carry on the work of Zonta. I feel your energy and enthusiasm. Together we will continue making a difference in the lives of women locally and globally.

Joann Usher, you have worked so very hard the past three years as our President, and WE thank you!

Thank you, members, for all your wonderful comments and suggestions that you shared both at our April meeting and in your one-on-one sessions with Carole S. They will be included in our planning.

My mission for the coming year will be to promote and carry out this message....

"The Zonta Club of Saint Paul is an international Service Organization of Intergenerational business and professional executives sharing their experiences and energy to improve the Status of Women locally and globally."

I hope you will join me in carrying out this mission.

Romelle

Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency/Club 100 News! (Excerpt from their newsletter)

Club 100 and Club 101 have really caught on at MVNA. Nurses see this project as a way to help clients overcome barriers and a way to bring hope and joy to a rather bleak existence. Our clients are often in desperate circumstances and the nurses make frequent requests for items that help families cope with day to day life.

We have helped more than 2,000 families; some of them many times. The response from the community has been outstanding!

A REQUEST FROM THE MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH NURSES: The nurses are often faced with teaching a mother to give her baby a bath - but often there are no supplies in the home. They ask for a towel, wash cloth, two cloth diapers, a small bottle of baby wash and a baby comb. This could be a great service project for an organization that wants a project that is hands on and inexpensive.

A STORY ABOUT MARIA: Erin, PHN started working with Maria (age 14), during the third trimester of her pregnancy. Maria, her mom, Nina, and 2 brothers have moved from California to the Twin Cities to be close to family. Nina has shared with Erin that she hopes to ?start over? in Minneapolis, leaving behind a life in California filled with domestic abuse, gang involvement and substance abuse.

The baby was born in late March and so far, Maria has demonstrated positive, appropriate parenting skills, excellent school attendance, follows through with all medical appointments, and is very receptive to teaching and advice. Erin will work with this family for at least a year, monitoring the baby?s growth and development, assessing Maria?s parenting skills and school attendance, connecting the family to community resources, addressing safety issues and offering assistance and support. Thanks to a generous donor who ?adopted? this family, Erin has been able to assist them with much needed baby items, such as a car seat, diapers, wipes, baby clothes, washcloths and a front pack for carrying the baby. Maria and Nina have deeply appreciated the largesse of the donor; mom and baby spend a lot of time bonding while using the front pack. On June 1, Maria?s family moved from a shelter into a house in South Minneapolis. Nina has a good lead on a job and states that her main priorities are taking care of her family and maintaining her sobriety. She attends a weekly support group that helps to ?keep her on track.? Club 100 and Erin would like to thank the community member who has cared enough to help this family move forward with their lives. Your help has given this family the encouragement they desperately needed.
