PEGGY'S MESSAGE

While Northern Minnesota is shoveling out from 2 feet of snow, we are enjoying spring weather. The birds have begun their spring singing, and the mallard couple has returned to once again to our street, no doubt in search of their nest under the hostas in our front yard. But, alas, the hostas have been replaced with smaller flowering perennials. Mama mallard has been voicing her displeasure at their disappearance.

We had a great blanket making service project last month at Carole’s party room. We made eight fleece blankets for MVNA Club 100 clients and enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Dorothy (courtesy of Lee Ann Chin’s and Lunds).

Romelle and I drove to Austin Saturday (April 5th) for the area meeting. There were 26 Zontians from seven Minnesota Clubs at the meeting. The two speakers were excellent and very informative. Bev Thompson spoke on the work she and her husband, Earl, are doing in Nepal towards helping young women become literate and understand better health care and cleanliness leads to healthier children and lives. The area meeting took up a collection and sent $625 to her organization to help with the education piece of their vital work.

Terese Amazi, Sheriff of Mower County, spoke on how we can protect ourselves, and the challenges of being the first female sheriff in Minnesota.

Carol Pasanen, our District Governor, presented information on the organizational structure of the District Board. She reminded us that our reports are due by May 5th for the year into her office so that she can complete the annual reports for International.

Our April meeting will be dinner and journalist lecture series on Tuesday, April 22nd. The event is held at Macalester College, and is part of their Broadcast Journalist Series with Tom Gjelten. Mr. Gjelten has reported on international, economic and security issues from all over the world for NPR. He is now the network’s intelligence correspondent and is coming out with a new book reflecting his years of extensive reporting on Cuba titled, "Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba: A Biography."

Dinner Attendance Rules

Members are to call Dorothy if they are unable to attend no later than the scheduled date provided in the current newsletter, or the Friday before the monthly meeting date. If you do not call, it will be assumed that you are attending and you will be billed for that meeting.

If you are unable to attend due to last minute circumstances, you will be billed for that meeting.

April Meeting

Dates and Times: Tuesday, April 22; 7:00 p.m.
Venue: Kagin Commons Hill Ballroom, Macalester College , 1600 Grand Ave, St. Paul. The program tickets are free of charge and are available at Bibelot stores.

We will have dinner (at your own cost) at 5 p.m. at Kyber Pass Café and then go to the College for the event. Khyber Pass Café serves authentic foods from Afghanistan. Afghani Cuisine reflects a unique mix of peoples and cultures. It is a rich and diverse cuisine, which includes influences from Indian, Persian, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Greek, Chinese and Central Asian cuisines. The blend of spices varies from family to family. Most dishes are flavorful but not hot. Generally, the hot spices are not added to the pot. Fresh or dried hot peppers, hot chutneys or spicy pickles are served on the side for those who prefer their food hot. Chutneys are relish-like condiments made of fruits & vegetables, ranging from sweet to very hot. Tea is an important part of Afghan culture. People drink tea throughout the day. Tea is the first thing guests are offered, and all meals end with a hot cup of tea.

We hope that you will think about inviting friends to attend this event.

St. Paul Zontian

Also, let us remember our own chapter members who are struggling with health issues for themselves and their families, for those who are dealing with family crisis, for those who might be traveling this winter season for a safe journey, and for those who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, either physically, emotionally, or spiritually. As Zontians, we need to lift up our fellow Zonta sisters as well as others.

Note:

As always, please let me know if you have any information to share;
I would be happy to include it in our newsletter.
Any and all ideas will be entertained!
