President's message:

A VIEW from NEW YORK CITY!

Thank you for electing me as your delegate to the 57th International Convention in Midtown Manhattan. I will give you a brief overview and suggest that you go to our International web site for more complete coverage.

The Convention started with the Opening Ceremony of the Flags and an outstanding speech by Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Director of Unifem. Some of her key points: Women are the victims but women "are the solution"; Women are weaving peace even in violent countries; Women need a) equal pay, b) safety (from violence) in the workplace, c) ability to move from unskilled to skilled work, d) dignity in advertising. "We must have peace with Justice".

The focus of the Convention was on the United Nations and their related organizations, where they are working, the issues in those areas and what is being accomplished. It was very interesting and informative.

Three additional speakers who were excellent in presentation and accomplishments were Terry Von Thaden, 2003-04 Amelia Earhart recipient and granddaughter of an aviatrix and friend of Amelia Earhart; Wei Ying Zhang, 2003 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business recipient; and Alexandra Ruperti, 2003 Young Women in Public Affairs recipient.

Some of the changes in the International Bylaws are: A new configuration of the International Nominating Committee passed as proposed by the Board --

Gender neutral "chairman" was not supported by the board and failed with half of the delegates voting for and half against. (2/3 needed to pass) Members no longer need to be activity engaged in their profession to hold office at the Club, Area, or District level. The requirements for membership did not change.

Two resolutions passed:
1. Resolution to promote the Awareness, Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS
2. Resolution of Umbilical Cord Blood, Stem cells and the Involvement of Women

The 2004 - 06 International Service Projects are:

1. Continue the STAR Network of World Learning in Bosnia & Herzegaovina;

2. Afghanistan Institute of Learning and UNICEF:

3. Reducing Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus in Afghanistan;

4. A new project with CARE International for MicroCredit and Health Education for HIV/AIDS-affected women in Niger.

The Marketplace was the center where everyone stopped, shopped, and visited. I staffed our table, when the convention was not conducting business and had the opportunity to visit with so many of the Zontians and their guests. There were about 30 tables from our US clubs.

THANK YOU Dorothy for donating three of your beautiful watercolors for our table. There were three clubs highlighted from the Marketplace in the daily newsletter of the convention and Dorothy's paintings were selected for this special recognition! By selling tickets for three drawings, we made $425 (after paying $50 for the table space) for the 2006 convention fund for Australia. THANK YOU, DOROTHY, for your generous donation.

After a week of meetings, speakers, dinners, plays and lots of listening and talking, I arrived home so very tired. As I reflect on another Zonta International Convention, I would like to share my thoughts ..... Zonta is not about me or we - our likes or dislikes. It is about THEM, OUR SISTERS WHO ARE PAYING A TREMENDOUS PRICE HAVING BEEN BORN FEMALE IN PLACES OF VIOLENCE AND POVERTY. Our challenges pale to the many stories and statistics we heard about our sisters. We, along with the United Nations and its many organizations are making a difference - never enough - but every community we touch from the Middle East to Africa, Asia to Europe, and the Americas brings hope and action. We are saving lives! We are enhancing the Status of Women and their families. We are a unique organization and we should feel Proud to be Zontians. We can and do make the world better!! Kathie Pulse

Mary Pulse called with an update on Kathie. Together with her doctor they have decided to have hospice assist Kathy. She will remain at Linden Healthcare Center in Stillwater. They are able to keep her comfortable with meds.

Mary said she enjoys visits, calls and cards. If she can not answer the phone, just leave a message and Mary or her sister will give her the message when they get there in the evening.
Telephone her at (651) 439-3997.
Her address is:
l05 W Linden Street,

Thank you!

Dear Zonta Club of St. Paul,

Thank you for your passion and the opportunity you give to assist women in striving for success in their careers and goals. I am so thankful for your generosity and honored to be recognized by professional women of integrity that have a desire to make a difference and change people's lives. The Jane M. Klausman Scholarship is an unexpected blessing that will be used towards continuing my education in business. Thanks so much!

Sincerely, Ashley Arndt

Global Event:

The Global Event Brochures are ready. Members at the July meeting were able to take brochures and each member not at the meeting should have received one brochure in the mail, detailing the event. We will have them at our August meeting. If you need brochures and cannot attend the August meeting, please let Lois know and she will coordinate getting a supply to you.

So---- start getting silent auction items and selling tickets to the event. Our deadline is October 15th, earlier than last year. The History Theatre will only hold tickets for the count that we give them on October 22nd. Last year we were able to continue selling tickets, but their policies have changed this year and they are planning on selling the remainder of the tickets once we get to October 22nd.

Tickets are $35.00 which covers the cost of the performance and the dinner. It is going to be a wonderful event!

July meeting minutes - We met at Judy's home for dinner and had several guests. Marj presented our Scholarship award to Ashley Arndt, who is going to the Carlson School of Business. We are agreed that she is a delightful young woman and hope that she can find time in her busy schedule to visit us!

Our other two guests were Jill Lindahl and Deb Schuhmacher. We presented Jill a check for one of our service project awards "Bonding with Baby Before Birth." Jill gave a brief presentation on how they hoped the project would help Romanian mothers (especially those who had been orphans themselves) bond with their babies and break this cycle.

20 ways to monkey with telemarketers
Compiled by Amy C. Fleitas • Bankrate.com

Telemarketers are the ones we love to hate. Not only are their calls unsolicited and annoying, but they seem to come just as you are sitting down to eat or hopping into the shower. What do you do? Hang up on the caller or politely decline to listen? Get mad?

Some people have made an art of playing with the telemarketers and getting a few chuckles along the way. We asked you to send in your clever responses to telemarketers' calls. Here are a few of the 20 ways!

Have I got a deal for you!
Interrupt the telemarketer's sales pitch and ask them if they would like to buy something from you (could be anything that you're selling). That will usually get them to end the call.

You have reached my voicemail
Say: "Hello." (Wait on them to start talking.) "I'm sorry we can't come to the phone right now. Please leave a message. Beep."

Funny you called
"You know, I was just thinking about (doing, buying) just that very same thing. So, I said to myself, 'Self, why don't you just (do, buy) it and get over it.' To my amazement, self replied with a loud, 'GO FOR IT!'" (Keep talking to take control of the conversation, never letting the telemarketer speak so he or she can't actually try to sell you anything.) "Well, me and myself will discuss it more and we'll get back to you."

From a country song
"I'd love to, but my husband just left me, he took my car, he let the dog loose without a collar, and I only have half a bottle of wine left. I'm not worried about the rest, but if you start selling wine, give me a call."

History - on August 24, ----

79 Mt. Vesuvius erupts, buries Pompeii & Herculaneum

1814 British sack Washington, DC, White House burned

1869 Waffle iron invented

1912 NYC ticker tape parade for Jim Thorpe and victorious US Olympians

1912 Territory of Alaska organized

1932 1st transcontinental non-stop flight by a woman, Amelia Earhart

1949 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) established

1954 International Amateur Athletic Federation recognizes Red China

1968 France became world's 5th thermonuclear power

1990 Iraqi troops surround US & other embassies in Kuwait City

1991 Gorbachev resigns as head of USSR Communist Party

1991 Ukraine declares independence from the USSR

And you are?

I'd love to hear more about why you are calling me, but I'm in the middle of dinner right now. Why don't you give me your home number so I can call you in the middle of your meal?

Keep talking

Rather than find creative ways in which to hang up on telemarketers, I decided many years ago that I could provide a public service by keeping them on the phone for as long as possible. The longer they spend with me, the less time they have to call other people. Often, they'll hang up on me before I can hang up on them!

What did I win?

Sometimes I'll act as if the sales call is one to inform me that I've won a prize. I'll exclaim, "I've never won anything in my life!" Then I'll ask for details on when and how my prize will be sent to me. And no matter how many times it's explained to me, I will never quite understand that I've won nothing and instead am being asked to buy something.

Thought for the day:
" Nothing beats reading a good book when there is work to do. "

See you all on the 24th!
