PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

We enjoyed our first event of the new year, starting at Axel’s Bonfire on Grand Avenue. We reserved a separate room for our group, and the staff rushed our food orders through quickly so that we could be on schedule for our tour of 10,000 Villages.

We also had two guests join us (both named Debbie) for our event – welcome to Deb and Debbie!

Many of us had never been to 10,000 Villages and we were very impressed. The craftsmanship and uniqueness of the items were superb. I think we all found something that we just “couldn’t leave without buying!” If you have never been to 10,000 Villages, it is well worth going to, particularly if you are looking for something out of the ordinary for yourself or for a gift. It also helps these artisans by providing a fair wage for their work.

Its merchandise comes from craftsman throughout the world, including … India, Pakistan, Central and South America, Indochina, and Africa. The staff gave us a brief history along with information about the various artists.

Our August event will be the President’s dinner, and it will be the THIRD Tuesday of August – August 21st. Please bring a guest to join us, and call Dorothy to let her know if you can or cannot attend, and the names of any guests you may have invited. The deadline for reservations is August 17th. The theme is celebrating our heritage with international cuisine! YUM !

Everyone should have received a packet with the event calendar, along with the President’s dinner information. If, for some reason, you do not have it, please let me know and I will send out another packet.

Also, a special thank you to Shirley for forwarding the $50 donation from River Ridge Condominium Association. We will definitely put it to good use in our service projects.

The Board met in July and worked on putting together a membership packet which we can give out to potential members. We will have them available at our President’s dinner.

Thanks to Romelle, Shirley and Phyllis for their input on this month’s newsletter.

Hope to see all of you August 21st!

                                                                                                                            Peggy

Jeremiah Program
Our Contact at the Jeremiah Program in St. Paul is no longer with them. I have been in touch with the Minneapolis facility and am awaiting a contact for the St. Paul location. One of the ideas on their website is to help with “new resident” welcome baskets. This may be a project that we can help with and may be able to work into our scheduled day at the shelter. Keep your eyes open for items that can be used for either the Women’s Advocates or for the Jeremiah Program.

Club Report:

At the end of each year our Club reports our activities to District and International. In the area of Community activities, out of a possible 140 points, we scored 15 points last fiscal year. We can do BETTER! Let’s all try to work toward improving our score this upcoming year. I will be putting in each newsletter the different report areas to help us keep in mind things that we can be doing, or should be doing. The answers in purple are simply suggestions that we could implement to try to meet the International goals for our club.

1.

The club participated in community activities, seminars, or committees which gave Zonta a high recognition factor. Be sure to mark any new ideas as new. (Attach copies of any pertinent information.).
Perhaps we can work with several other organizations to help them reach their goals? Any suggestions?

2.
The club received public recognition in the media for Zonta programs or events.
Consider submitting our meeting event to local papers for publication and as a way to get information out to the public about our organization.

3.

The club sent applications to area schools for the Young Women in Public Affairs Award.
We do not have this in our budget, but we do have funds available in our treasury if we were to pursue this award.

4.

The club provided press releases to local media for the Young Women in Public Affairs Award. (attach copy of press release)
If we decide to offer an award, this is one way to get the information out to potential applicants.

5.

The club sent applications to area schools for the Jane Klausman Award.
Same as YWPA award information;

6.
The club provided press releases to local media for the Jane M. Klausman Award. (attach copy of press release)
Same as YWPA award suggestions
.

7.

The club has an ongoing correspondence with a club outside the District.
We will be sending our newsletter to Nicola from Christchurch, NZ and hopefully receiving other correspondence from her and her club.

8.

The club has a regularly published newsletter.
The Zonta Paul. Also available on our website. Please note that we have archived past issues of the Zonta Paul for your reference.

9.

The club sends one copy of the newsletter either electronically or by mail to the area director and the governor.
We currently send a copy of the letter each month via e-mail to these individuals.

10.

The club participated in Rose Day.
Held each March (8th) – we have not participated as a group for a few years – any suggestions?

Zonta International Headquarters Update

The Zonta International headquarters building was originally purchased in 1986 and the mortgage paid off in 1996. The Boards of Zonta International Foundation (the building owner) and Zonta International have approved selling the present building and purchasing an office condominium. The new office will be more up-to-date and be more cost effective that keeping the current building, which is too large for ZI current needs. Purchasing an office condominium will allow ZI better control over their financial situation, enable them to better diversity their investments and honor ZI heritage and the confidence shown by Zontians in enabling the purchase of ZI headquarters in 1986. More information is available in the ZI website in the “frequently asked questions” (FAQ) section.

Since 1928, Zonta International has addressed challenges to women’s equality in science, business, public affairs and government by providing critical financial support through programs funded by the Zonta International Foundation. Men outnumber women almost three to one among those planning careers in computer or information sciences, according to a United Nations Statistics division report. Women hold just 10.4 percent of the board seats of global 200 companies, as ranked by Fortune Magazine, according to Corporate Women Directors International. Women hold just 15.4 percent of seats in the world's national parliaments, according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Joann Hanson

Romelle, Lauraine and I attended a late afternoon get-together at Joann Hanson’s home Sunday, August 5 to meet a Jackie, a Zontian from the Colombo, Sri Lanka’s chapter.

She was in the Twin cities visiting family. We hope that we can connect when she returns to Minnesota. Her Club in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has been very active in helping to reconstruct their country after the Tsunami. They have helped build 31 homes for families who lost their homes in the disaster. Quite an accomplishment for a group of 40+ women! They also work toward providing literacy assistance in the form of scholarships and service for children whose families cannot afford the books and supplies needed for education.

Jackie works for an NGO (Non Government Organization) in the area of human rights. Meeting and getting to know Jackie brought the international issues which affect all of us in some way closer together. There are social, economic, education, and human rights issues all over the world, and if progress is going to be made in improving the status of those affected by those issues, it will take all of us, working together, one step at a time. We can indeed make a positive difference in the lives of those affected. And, as is often the case, the greatest gift is knowing in our own hearts that we made a difference. Thanks to the Minneapolis Zontians for hosting this get-together!

NOTE:

As always, please let me know if you have any information to share;
I would be happy to include it in our newsletter.
Any and all ideas will be entertained!

See you all on August 21st!
