SEE YOU!:

PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

Our first event for the new year was our Service Project at Jerimiah Program in St. Paul. We prepared Dorothy’s church meatloaf recipe (which was a #1 hit with the residents and staff), scalloped potatoes, vegetables, bread, fruit salad and home made cookies, courtesy of Virginia, Dorothy and myself. Romelle, Dorothy, Judy and I started the evening meal at 4 p.m. and started serving at approximately 5:30. We were finished by 7 p.m. The leftovers were plated and covered with foil for the residents to take to their units, if desired. We had a really fun time and definitely thought that this was a service project worth repeating.

Judy received this note from the Jeremiah Program:

Judy – thanks to you and the Zonta Saint Paul group for a lovely "Cooking for Kids" evening. Everyone raved!

Carol mentioned you might be interested in scheduling another date. If so, please let me know your thoughts/desired timing. I’d be happy to forward upcoming openings at our Saint Paul campus.

Blessings to all of you!
Beth Garland | Volunteer Manager,
Jeremiah Program

Our next event is the President’s dinner and will be at Peggy’s home, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19th. We will be featuring Minnesota foods and focusing on the 150 year sesquicentennial celebration of Minnesota. You should have all received the invitation materials. If not, please let me know and I will send out replacements. This event will be a fun event and we hope that we will have several guests attending. Please invite friends or family who you would like to introduce to Zonta or who would just enjoy a fun evening out.

We hope to have our Area Director, Sonja Jacobsen, at our meeting giving us an update on the International Conference held in Rotterdam.

Call Dorothy to let her know if you can or cannot attend, and the names of any guests you may have invited. The deadline for reservations is August 16th.

We have been busy putting together the event calendar for the year too. This year we will be meeting at member homes in a more informal, relaxed setting. The member who is hosting the meeting will be responsible for the menu, the program for that meeting and for asking other members for assistance, as needed. And, all meetings are open for invited guests.

Update on Shirley – As of last week, she was at Southview Care Center in West St. Paul. Her daughter, Debbie, said that she was responding to rehab very well and hoped to be home in no time at all! We all hope so too.

Hope to see all of you August 19th!

Dinner Attendance Rules

Members are to call Dorothy if they are unable to attend no later than that the Friday before the monthly meeting date. If you do not call, it will be assumed that you are attending and you will be billed for those meetings in which the standard meal fee is charged. The meetings have a meal charge, which is meant to cover the cost of the host’s chosen menu and beverages. We hope that, in some cases, there will be extra money leftover for our service projects.

If you are unable to attend due to last minute circumstances, you will be billed for that meeting.

Exception: Please contact Dorothy or Peggy for the President’s dinner by August 16th. We need a close count so that we have adequate food and refreshments.

August Meeting

Dates and Times: Tuesday, August 19th; Estimated Start Time 6:00 p.m.

Venue: President's Dinner at Peggy's.

SERVICE UPDATE - MVNA:

The requests from our nurses can be large or small -- from a Pack and Play portable crib for safe sleeping which is $40.00 -- to developmental toys such as snap beads for $5.00. Many of the items listed below are $10.00 or less. A donation of these items will bridge the gap in the life of our clients:

Urgently Needed: $20 Cub Food Cards

Other items include board books, pharmacy card (Walgreen's), baby/toddler clothes, bus cards, diapers, wooden puzzles, and bath towels

If you are able to purchase any of these items please drop them off at MVNA.

Through community funds, in-kind donations and grants, MVNA Volunteer Services is able to bridge barriers faced by our clients by providing needed non-medical items. These items, along with the care from our nurses, create an environment of supporting health and independence for the clients.

Service Project Ideas?

If any of you have any ideas for a service project that would help women in our community, please tell Judy, Lauraine or Pat. Another idea that we might be interested in doing is putting together a "birthday cake kit" for distribution to families whose members are having a birthday, but who are not able to afford the makings of a birthday cake. Romelle is gathering information on this project for us. We are planning on having another fleece blanket making project on November 25th at Carole’s party room, and putting together our Holiday gift bags for MVNA in late November/early December.
