PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

As I am writing this month’s newsletter, the snow is falling and the weather forecasters predict 8-15” of snow on the Metro area and Northern Minnesota. Warm up the hot chocolate and snuggle in with a good book or watch a classic movie. Although each Christmas season seems to produce new Christmas theme films, I haven’t seen any that match the classic Christmas movies “A Christmas Carole”, “Miracle on 34th Street”, “Christmas in Connecticut”, “White Christmas”, “Holiday Inn” or "Little Shop Around The Corner". While the remakes of those classic films attempt to lure its viewers into their stories, they seem to fall short and somehow pale next to the originals.

Zonta’s November event was hosted by Phyllis and Erma at the party room in their condo building in St. Paul. As Evelyn and I drove up to the building on Cherokee Avenue, our thoughts turned to memories we had about Marj, who had lived in their building for many years. We felt as if she would come walking through the door at any moment. Our heartfelt thanks to both Phyllis and Erma for the delicious dinner of “Mom’s pork chops”, wild rice casserole, “Shirley’s bean salad”, chocolate rice krispie bars as well as appetizers and beverages. Everything was delicious! Phyllis is sharing her recipe with us.

Mom’s pork chops:

4 lean 1” pork chops (remove bone)
1 onion sliced
1 cup of Italian dressing
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup catsup

Place pork chops in Pyrex baking dish, cover with sliced onions, sprinkle brown sugar over onions, drizzle catsup over brown sugar, and pour Italian dressing over entire mixture. You may need to add more water as it cooks.

Cover and bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour; uncover and bake an additional 30 minutes. Add more liquid if necessary (water).

Salt and pepper to taste.

The dinner earned $120 to use for our service projects. The six members and two hosts produced seven warm fleece blankets, with promises of six more from Shirley, Romelle and Evelyn. We hope to deliver the blankets to MVNA along with the holiday bags.

And, speaking of Holiday bags, thank you so much to those who brought goodies or gave money for the much appreciated and needed bags. Judy, Evelyn and I will be shopping and assembling the bags on December 6th. If you have items that you planned on donating and weren’t able to bring them to the November meeting, please call Peggy or Judy or drop them off at Evelyn’s before December 6th. If you wanted to give cash towards the bags, please bring it to the December Christmas get-together at Dorothy’s on December 11th. These bags are given by MVNA to those needy families who would otherwise have no other holiday goodies. We have already gotten some salon hair products (donated by Lakes Hair Design in Lindstrom, MN), toothpaste and mouthwash (donated by Dr. Kenneth D. Salo, DDS) along with the candy and goodies we collected at the November meeting.

Since Women’s Advocates already has a group of women making fleece blankets for their residents on a regular basis, we will plan on giving our fleece blankets to MVNA families.

Dinner Attendance Rules

Members are to call Dorothy if they are unable to attend no later than the scheduled date provided in the current newsletter, or the Friday before the monthly meeting date. If you do not call, it will be assumed that you are attending and you will be billed for that meeting.

If you are unable to attend due to last minute circumstances, you will be billed for that meeting.

December Meeting

The December meeting will be hosted Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at Dorothy’s home at Becketwood. The cost will be $20. Please plan on arriving around 5 p.m. and go to Dorothy’s unit, where we can leave our coats and other outerwear. We can then proceed downstairs to Becketwood’s beautifully decorated dining area where we will be enjoying a deliciously prepared meal by the Becketwood staff.

Dorothy’s unit is a distance from the elevators and if you think you might have difficulty in making the trip twice, the lobby has a nice seating area in which to wait. Dorothy has promised us fun and entertainment after dinner (which will be a surprise, since this detective hasn’t been able to get her to spill the beans!). I hope that we will all be able to come and celebrate Zonta St. Paul at Becketwood (which is in Minneapolis). Maybe we could petition to annex Becketwood to St. Paul????

Please call Dorothy by Friday December 7th to let her know whether or not you will be able to attend. If you have not contacted Dorothy, she may follow up with you, since Becketwood will need to have an exact count for dinner. If Dorothy has not heard from you, she will assume that you are not attending and a meal will not be reserved on your behalf. If you are unable to attend after making your reservation, you will be billed for the dinner since Dorothy is obligated for the number of reservations made. Becketwood provides dinners for residents and their guests so there may be other events happening on December 11th. Our dinner reservations are promptly at 5:30, and we all need to be seated by that time.

The complex has a driveway that goes around the entry area of the building. This is an excellent spot to drop off passengers, since the parking area is about a block in distance from the entryway. Everyone will need to sign in before entry into the building. If you arrive close to the 5:30 time, then

you will want to wait in the lobby area. The staff at Becketwood has been put on the alert for those Zonta St. Paul celebrants and will be on the lookout for a wild group of frolicking females from the other side of the river!

Anyone needing transportation to the meeting, please call Romelle or Peggy.

Here is the map to Becketwood.

HOST FAMILIES NEED!

The Nacel International School (NIS) in St. Paul is an international high school located on the campus of Hamline University. Every year over 100 students from approximately 20 countries attend school at NIS. They are looking for 30 host families for students who will be arriving this January for the spring semester. They are looking for singles, couples, families and empty-nesters who might be willing to open their home to an international student for the spring semester. The students have their own spending money and health insurance. The host family will receive a monthly stipend in the amount of $300 per student per month. The host family should be on or near a bus line. It might be too late for this spring semester, so you may want to consider another future term. If you would like more information contact Meeka Urlaub at 612-805-9939 or go on-line to Nacel International School System Website

Service:

MVNA will be having its annual booth at Har-Mar Mall - Gifts for Families/Adopt a Family during late November – early December. Zonta St. Paul members will be staffing the booth on Monday, December 3rd from 12 noon to 8 p.m. We had hoped to sell poinsettias at this time, but were not able to get approval from the Mall. Romelle has set up a table at MVNA offices to take orders and those proceeds will be going to MVNA.

Hopefully you have all been working on your poinsettia sales and have given Shirley the sales information. She will coordinate with Linder’s for pickup and delivery as in the past. Erma contacted the College Club on our behalf and they have placed an order. Marj had been the contact for this organization in the past. Since this is going to be our only big fund raising project this year, I hope that everyone will participate in the event so that we can provide much needed funds to local and international projects. If you aren’t able to sell, please consider donating money towards service.

January Meeting:

At our November meeting, we discussed three new options for a January meeting. It included a concert, a film or a book reading event, all activities of the St. Paul Library system. A majority vote selected The Rose Ensemble Noon Concert, which will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Central Library, Magazine Room, 90 W. 4th Street, St. Paul. The Rose Ensemble is an award winning Twin Cities ensemble presenting early vocal music and this is their annual free concert held at Central Library. The concert starts at 12 noon and will be approximately 45 minutes in length. Following the concert, we will go to Zelda Coffee Café, which serves coffee, hot soup, sandwiches and other treats. The Café is located at the entrance to the library. St Paul Library Website

A Christmas Poem

I want to share this Christmas Poem (author unknown) with you.

My Christmas Wish For You

My Christmas wish for you, my friend
Is not a simple one
For I wish you hope and joy and peace
Days filled with warmth and sun

I wish you love and friendship too
Throughout the coming year
Lots of laughter and happiness
To fill your world with cheer

May you count your blessings, one by one
And when totaled by the lot
May you find all you've been given
To be more than what you sought

May your journeys be short, your burdens light
May your spirit never grow old
May all your clouds have silver linings
And your rainbows pots of gold

I wish this all and so much more
May all your dreams come true
May you have a Merry Christmas friend
And a happy New Year, too ..

Note:

As always, please let me know if you have any information to share;
I would be happy to include it in our newsletter.
Any and all ideas will be entertained!

SEE YOU!:

See you all on December 11th!
