PRESIDENTS MESSAGE. . . . .

Greetings and Best Wishes for a Happy, Healthy 2005! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season.

The 6th Annual Global Event was a grand success. Many thanks to Lois, our event chair, and each & every member - together we staged another classy, fun, and profitable evening. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I felt so proud to be a member of this club.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Mary, in the loss of your dear sister Kathy. We will all miss her.

Eight fleece baby blankets for Club 100 and eight fleece twin blankets for the Women's Advocate is a needed contribution. You have continued a wonderful service project. Jennifer, you are in our thoughts!

Poinsettias everywhere. . . . Another year and another very successful fund-raiser for service. Thank you Carole and Lauraine for all your work in coordinating this project. And, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it a success.

Thank you Judy and Evelyn for assembling 25 baskets for MHNA Club l00 and everyone who contributed.

We have accomplished so much in just the first half of our year. I am so pleased - take a bow!

I hope you have mild weather so everyone can attend the January monthly meeting. President-elect Carole will be asking for your input as she prepares the schedule for Hands-On service at the Women's Advocate Center for the upcoming months. Bring your calendars.

Our International President has requested that each club work through our local areas to support the needs of people devastated by the earthquake and tsunami forces. I have asked our Board to address this and report at the meeting for your input.

Romelle

Twenty five bags, filled with special treats including hot chocolate mix, holiday cookies, dessert cakes, fruit juice, muffin mix, candy bags, coloring books, 2005 photo calendars, shampoo and miscellaneous grooming products, mittens and baby toys were delivered to the Club 100 Visiting Nurses for distribution throughout the community.

Special thanks to everyone who brought items to our November meeting along with those who generously made a cash donation and also to Judy, Carole and Evelyn for help with filling the bags at Evelyn's home and arranging delivery in time for the holidays.

Zonta Club of Franklin Area (District 11, Area 2) -newly chartered in 1998 was putting together a Zonta Cookbook of the Western Hemisphere as one of their projects. They requested a recipe from each club that would be representative of our geographic area. Romelle sent them "Glazed Apple Slice Bars", a recipe of Evelyn's from Cooking in Minnesota. I received an update from them indicating that it would be on their website when it is finished. They have over 400 recipes!

Virginia - Feb 19

The Board Meeting in February will be held after our regular February meeting if necessary.

Zonta International wants all members to register on-line at their web site. You will need to set up a password and member ID. If you have not registered with the Web site, please register now. Lou has agreed to help if you need assistance in getting registered. Just give him a call.

The Board met Monday, January 10, 2005.

Carole reported that 440 poinsettias were sold.
A brief discussion centered around grant recipients for the upcoming year and it was decided to bring the following to the membership in January:
i.e., we are considering continuing with our current grant recipients and asking them to send us a letter of request for funds rather than completing the longer application.
The board felt that our Club was more involved with our current recipients and would like to continue those relationships.
The current recipients have all been active in the community for a long time and have a proven track record. Please give this suggestion your thoughtful consideration and bring pros and cons to our January meeting.

Since our club treasurer was out of town for an extended period of time during November and December, there was no financial report on fund raising activities. However, we have available funds for our three grantees and will be issuing their grant funds at our January meeting. Both Women's Advocate, Inc, and Club 100 we be contacted to if they are available to come to our January meeting.

The board authorized a transfer to service for Kathie Pulse as a memorial.

Membership -

Please invite any potential members as guests to our January meeting. Since we hope to have our great recipients attend, it will be a great opportunity for them to hear about our service projects!

The following information is on Zonta International Website and relates to the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, India and Africa.

Subject: URGENT Tsunami Disaster in South Asia and East Africa

As you know, the earthquake and resulting tsunami have caused enormous devastation in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, and Malaysia, among other countries. There are Zonta clubs in all of these countries except Indonesia. The human loss, the challenges of meeting the basic needs of survivors, disease prevention and economic loss are, of course, severely affecting all of these countries. Zontians in many countries may have lost friends and family members. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost loved ones.

As this tragedy continues to unfold, the need for international assistance is enormous. We are receiving many inquiries on how we as Zontians can help, in addition to our normal service support to the women in our own communities and to our programs funded through our Foundation.

Rather than establishing an emergency or disaster relief fund through our Foundation, we believe it is much more effective - in terms of time and costs - for individuals to contribute to emergency and disaster relief efforts directly through the organizations that have special disaster emergency expertise.

Our donations directly to the charities best positioned to deliver aid in this situation is the most immediately effective means of helping, provides for simplicity of payment with the least amount of bank and processing fees, and may provide tax benefits to the donor.

We have posted a message on the Zonta International / Zonta International Foundation Web site, http://www.zonta.org/. We are responding to inquiries to Headquarters with this same message. We encourage you to use this response for inquiries you may receive, and to refer members to the Web site.

It is important to also keep in mind that the immediate emergency response is just the beginning, and that women and girls will be especially vulnerable over the coming months.

I have written to the Governors of Districts 17 and 25 to express our deepest sympathy and our concerns for all those affected by this human tragedy on behalf of Zonta International and the Zonta International Foundation. We will post updated information on the Zonta International / Zonta International Foundation Web site.

I hope the New Year will bring a better world, and that time will help heal the hearts of the hundreds of thousands of people who have lost family and friends in this tragic natural disaster.

February 6 - National Wear Red Day for Women!

In 2003, the American Heart Association launched a national campaign, Go Red for Women, to encourage women to live stronger, longer lives by recognizing their risk of heart disease and working to reduce their risk. Part of the campaign is National Wear Red Day for Women. On February 6th, everyone is encouraged to wear red to help raise awareness of heart disease among women.

Heart disease is the No. 2 killer of women. Most women don't know they are at risk. Chest pain is a symptom in women, but it may not follow the classic pattern of pain or pressure in the middle or left side of the chest. Instead, women may experience:
pain located in the jaw, teeth, throat, neck, shoulders and back.
vague chest pain that comes and goes over several days.
no chest pain at all (common in women who have diabetes)
extreme fatigue
nausea
shortness of breath
general discomfort in the abdominal area
sweating
heartburn
dizziness
weakness
loss of appetite
palpitations

Once a woman passes menopause, her risk of heart disease equals that of men.

Jane M Klausman Women in Business - Deadline for Scholarship Applications is February 1st. If you know of someone who may qualify, please direct them to Marj or to our website.
The Young Woman in Public Affairs award deadline is February 28th. Lollie has graciously agreed to take charge of this award for us. If you know of a qualified applicant, please direct them to Lollie or our website.
Reminder - call Dorothy this month to let her know if you "ARE" attending. It is important for her to know how many of us are attending so that she can let Joseph's know; so we are resuming our old policy of calling to confirm. In addition, due to the difficulty in finding suitable menu items at our current dinner cost of $17.50, the Board will be bringing a proposal to the members at our January meeting to increase the cost of our meeting meals to $20.00. Also be aware that if you register for dinner, you are responsible for the meal cost and you will be billed even if you cannot attend.

See you All on January 25th!
