SEE YOU!:

PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

We have a short letter for today.

Hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July festivities. We have just been enjoying the nice warm weather ? not too hot and not too cold. It was certainly nice to see the sunshine.

Lou and I saw the documentary film ?Food, Inc.? produced by Robert Kenner this past week. It exposes the nation?s food industry, the role of the USDA and FDA, and shows how our industrialized food production is basically controlled by a few corporations. Corporations generally have their own interests at heart, not those of its consumer.

The movie discusses ?bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide resistant soybean seeds (which were patented by Monsanto), tomatoes that won?t go bad (picked green and ripened with ethylene gas) and new strains of E coli. Approximately 73,000 Americans are affected by E coli annually and some of those affected with this deadly bacteria die. The E coli incidences have increased due to feedlots and the use of corn as a feed for cattle, pigs, chickens. For those cattle raised in a feedlot the likelihood of E coli is much greater than those who are free ranged and fed grasses. If the cattle were allowed to grass feed the last five days before sending to the slaughterhouse, it would eliminate 80% of the e coli in those animals. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

The food industry represents its products depicting a rural farm scene, complete with barn, cows and pastures. In actuality, most of our food is grown on huge feedlots in less than pastoral conditions.

The food industry today has a huge impact upon our environment, our health, the nation?s economy and worker?s rights and working conditions.

We certainly didn?t feel like rushing to the grocery store after seeing the film, but it did bring to light the food industry and the impact our current food production is having on our health. The book is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Borders. The film is currently showing at the Landmark Lagoon theatre and well worth seeing. Food Inc Preview

The website offered the following suggestions on how we can work to change our food system, including: (1) stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages,
(2) eat at home,
(3) support the passage of laws requiring chain restaurants to post calorie and nutrition information on menus and menu boards,
(4) tell schools to stop selling sodas and junk foods ? over the last twenty years, rates of obesity in children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years has tripled. There is an epidemic of diabetes among our young people today, so much that one of ever two black children will have diabetes in their lifetime.
(5) Go without meat one day a week ? an estimated 70% of all antibiotics used in the US are given to farm animals,
(6) buy organic or sustainable food with little or no pesticides,
(7) visit your local farmer?s market ? Farmer?s markets allow farmers to keep 80 ? 90% of their sales,
(8) read labels,
(9) tell Congress that food safety is important to you and,
(10) demand job protections for farm workers and food processors. Poverty among farm workers is more than twice that of all wage and salary employees.

The average American eats 200 pounds of meat per year. We have decided to track how much meat we consume. Meat includes not only beef and pork, but poultry and seafood.

July

July is the seventh month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days. It is, on average, the warmest month in most of the Northern hemisphere (where it is the second month of summer) and the coldest month in much of the Southern hemisphere. The second half of the year commences in July.

The birthstone for July is a red ruby.

In the Northern hemisphere:

Dog days begin in early July, when the hot sultry weather of summer usually starts. Summer school is under way for many students. Spring lambs, born in late winter or early spring, are usually sold before July 1st. July was renamed for Julius Caesar, who was born in that month. Previously, it was called Quintilis in Latin.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.

July starts on the same day of the week as April every year, and January in leap years.

July 28th, 2009 Meeting

Our July event is all scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2009. We will be having “Tea in the Garden” at Panola Valley Gardens, which is located at 26026 Olinda Trail, Lindstrom, MN 55045. The luncheon will begin at 12:30 and wrap up at 2:30 p.m. We will be carpooling and will coordinate once we know who all is going to be able to go.

I have enclosed a map of the location. Directions: Take 35 north to Highway 97 exit and go east (right). At Highway 61, turn north. At the next stop light, turn right (highway 97) and continue east (approx. 9 miles). Follow 97 to Scandia, and turn left at light (Olinda Trail North). Go approximately 4.9 miles toward 259th Street. Turn left at Panola Gardens sign. It will take about 40 minutes from my house to get to the gardens.

Here is a picture of part of their beautiful gardens.

Please let Dorothy know by July 21st if you are planning on attending, if you can drive or if you need transportation, and if you are inviting a friend to attend. The price will be $22 to $25 (I don?t have the exact amount). I think it will be a really fun event.

August 25th, 2009 President’s Dinner

Dates and Times: Tuesday, August 25th; Start Time 5:30 p.m. with Dinner at 6:00 pm

Venue: The President’s Dinner will be held at Peggy’s on Tuesday, August 25th. The dinner will start around 6 p.m. We will be sending out the information in July with extra invitations so that you can invite guests to the event. Our theme for the 2009 President's Dinner will be the “Celebrating the State Fair with Zonta St. Paul”. Cost will be $20 and will go toward our convention fund.

Romelle suggested the State Fair theme since the fair will be starting that very week. We are going to use food on a stick as the main theme for our food items. A menu will be prepared and we will be contacting members for various food items. If you have any suggestions, please let Romelle or me know. We are going to have kabobs and fruit on a stick. More on this in August.

AS ALWAYS

Have a wonderful summer, and hope to see you all at our July Tea Garden Event and at our President’s dinner!
