PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

Thanks to all of you for helping make our “Celebrate Zonta St. Paul” a rip-roaring success! We accomplished our goals and then some this year.

We met at Shirley’s on May 27th for our final meeting of the fiscal year and were treated to a very special presentation by Cambria Camillo. Cambria is a high school senior who was selected as a national finalist for the 2008 Minnesota History Day program. She will be participating in the National History Day contest in Washington, D.C. on June 14-19. Cambria’s presentation was a performance as Hannah More, a well-known white woman abolitionist in England in the late 1700’s – early 1800’s. We are all rooting for Cambria as she travels to Washington D.C. and wish her well as she continues on to college.

We also enjoyed a wonderful assortment of salads and desserts, which were delicious! Several have asked for the recipes which follow:

(T=tablespoon)
(t=teaspoon)

4 T salad oil
4 T white vinegar
4 T orange juice
4 t salt
Mix together and pour over 6 to 8 cups of cooked chicken. Marinate for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight.

2-1/2 cups of cooked Rosa Marina or Orzo pasta
3 cups pineapple tidbits - well drained
3 cups mandarin oranges - well drained
2 cups real mayo
Add to chicken mixture
Add celery salt to taste
1 cup toasted almonds can be mixed in or served on the side when ready to serve.

Tequila berry Salad

Dressing:

1/2 cup sugar
2 T bacon grease
1/2 jar real bacon bits
Blend together and refrigerate overnight.

1/2 head cauliflower flowerets
1 small bunch radishes sliced thin
1 lb. bacon fried crisp and crumbled
1 head of romaine lettuce
1/2 head iceberg lettuce or any lettuce of choice
Mix above together -
Mix in dressing right before serving -
Sprinkle top with 4 oz. shredded Parmesan cheese

Yum!

Club Business

Romelle reviewed the annual reports filed with Zonta District #7; we looked over our financial report for April 2008, and approved $900 in additional service grants for our year ended May 31, 2008.

The slate of officers was presented for 2008-09 and opened up for any nominations from the floor. No additional nominations arose and we voted unanimously to approve the slate as presented. Our officers and committees for 2008-09 will be as follows:

Club Officers:

President – Judy Cognetta
Vice President – Janet Shannon
Secretary – Evelyn McDonald
Treasurer – Peggy St. Germain
Past President – Carole Snyder

Committees are as follows:

Service – Judy, Lauraine and Pat
Membership – Janet, all members
Newsletter and Web Site – Peggy & Lou
Hospitality – Dorothy and Virginia
Program, including United Nations – Romelle, Evelyn
Fund Raising – Shirley and all members
Nominations – Romelle and Peggy

If you would like to be specifically included on a specific committee, please let one of the Board officers know and we will add your name to the committee. As always, all members are welcome to participate in any or all of the committees.

Our June meeting will be Thursday, June 19th, and will be a service project in which we will prepare and serve dinner to the Jeremiah Program residents after which they will attend their in-house classes. Judy briefly updated everyone on the project. She will be in charge of purchasing the grocery items needed for our dinner. We discussed the menu and will be making meat loaf (thank you Dorothy for the wonderful recipe), macaroni and cheese, green beans, dinner rolls, fruit cocktail salad, beverages and dessert. The facility has room for 6 “chefs” which should be more than adequate to prepare the meal for approximately 50 women and children. Please call Judy at for preparation times, etc. This should be a fun event which will help support the Jeremiah Program.

We do not presently have a meeting or activity in July.

Women’s Visiting Nurses – Club 100 News

Romelle and Peggy attended the Fund raising breakfast event held at Nicollet Island Pavilion on June 3rd. It was a packed house and gave us a little more insight into the valuable services that MVNA provides to our communities. We gave them our check for 2008; in total, for 2007-08, between our holiday bags, fleece blankets and cash contributions; our club has provided Club 100 with over $900 of support.

Northwest Youth & Family Services News

Seven representatives from Zonta St. Paul attended the Leadership Luncheon held at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville. It was a bustling, energized event. We provided NYFS with a $500 grant this year to assist in their work with women and children.

Our Issues and Programs:

If poverty, HIV/AIDs, illiteracy, violence and human trafficking had a face it would be female. The world's plagues are rooted in gender inequality, and the only common solution is the empowerment of women.

Zonta International is on the front lines of global and local efforts to help women overcome barriers to equal education, health care, legal rights, credit and employment through education, service and advocacy programs funded by the Zonta International Foundation.

Fast Facts

  • 70 percent of the 1.3 billion poor are women.
  • Two-thirds of illiterate adults are women and two-thirds of children not in school are girls.
  • 60 million women are "missing" because of gender-based violence.
  • Every year an estimated 4 million women and girls are bought and sold worldwide.
  • Today, 7,000 women and girls will contract HIV.

St. Paul Business Professional Women (BPW) News

Local Chapter meetings are Wednesday June 25th and Wednesday, July 23, both at 5:30 p.m. at George’s on Plato in St. Paul. Programs to be announced. If you would like to attend, contact Connie.

Presidents Dinner:

The President's Dinner will be held at Peggy's on Tuesday, August 19th. The dinner will start around 6 p.m. We will be sending out the information in July with extra invitations so that you can invite guests to the event. Our theme for the 2008 President's Dinner will be the Celebrate St. Paul Zonta and Minnesota’s Sesquicentennial! If you have ideas for food items that were prominent in the history of the state, let Peggy or Romelle know. The invitation will include directions to Peggy's. We hope that everyone will be able to attend and will invite friends and family who have an interest in Zonta and who may be prospective members. Cost will be $20 and will go toward our convention fund.

We will be planning for the President’s dinner in the next few weeks.

Also, if you have any suggestions for venues or programs, please let Romelle or Evelyn know so that they can follow up on those ideas. This year promises to be as fun and exciting as last year!

Call Dorothy with your reservations!
