PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Dear Zontians,

Greetings! Our new fiscal year began June 1st. The Board met in early June to begin planning for the upcoming year. We have a few events this summer that we hope many of you will be able to attend and participate in.

We had a very positive response to the blankets that we made last year. Those who attended the blanket making sessions really enjoyed this project. It is fun to see the finished product and to know that a young infant or toddler will have a special new fleece blanket to keep them warm. The scheduled date for this event is Tuesday, July 25th at Carole's party room in Roseville. The times will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please bring a dish to share. Please let Carole know if you are planning on coming and if you need transportation.

Our second fun summer event will be our President's Dinner. It will be held at Peggy's on Tuesday, August 22nd. The dinner will start around 6 p.m. We will be sending out invitations to members with extras so guests can be invited. Our theme for the 2006 President's Dinner will be a Dutch theme. The invitation will include directions to Peggy's. We hope that everyone will be able to attend and will invite friends and family who have an interest in Zonta and who may be prospective members. Cost will be $10 and will go toward our convention fund.

Our membership totals 12 members as of June 1st. We are sad to say goodbye to Lois and Evelyn. Many heartfelt thanks to them for their many years of faithful service. We hope that we will continue to see them at Zonta events and keep in touch with us. Lois had been a member since 1979 and Evelyn was a member since 1968. Lucille also discontinued her membership and she had been a member since 1970. Again, many thanks for making Zonta St. Paul a great organization to belong to.

With our membership reduced, we will be addressing events that our club has been hosting over the past few years. We had not yet approved a budget, nor have we selected any service recipients. Since we are such a small group, we need to seriously consider the events that we will sponsor and get involved in.

We have discussed having a global event this year which would be at the history theatre. If we were to commit to having that venue, it will mean that our members will all need to pitch in. We would need each member to account for 10 silent auction items and 12-15 guests. The theatre has tentatively given us an option on Friday, December 1st for the performance of Lutefisk Champ and other Frozen HolidayTales. Our commitment would be for 125 tickets up to 150 tickets. Please consider your individual talents and how much time and effort you would be able to contribute to this event.

We will also need to replace Lollie as Secretary, so please think about whether you would be able to assume this role.

We ended our fiscal year with cash of $7,108, which includes $956 in the Foundation account. After payment of annual dues and other items in June, our bank account is approximately $5,460. Our service fund is $1,480; our convention fund is $950; our general fund is $3,040. A full financial report will be available at our September meeting.

Hope to see you all on July 25th and again on August 22nd.

Service Projects - Update:

July Service Project
Blanket-Making at
Carole’s Home
1690 W. Highway 36

Tuesday, July 25, 5:00 p.m.

Join us on Tuesday, July 25, at Carole’s for a special hands-on service project. This is an opportunity to be part of an activity that helps others and it is a fun way to socialize with other Zonta members while making a difference in the community. All materials will be provided so all you have to do is “cut” and “tie” the ends for a finished blanket! If you have an extra pair of shears, bring them with!

Since this activity is during the dinner hour, bring something easy to share with others (cheese/crackers, dip/fruit, cold cuts/rolls, salad, etc.).

We will meet in the Recreation Center of her complex so park on either side of the pond and enter the building marked 1630 W. Highway 36. This complex is on the south side of Highway 36 facing Rosedale. Take the frontage road from the northwest corner of Snelling & County Rd. B (by Outback Steakhouse) and follow it as it winds along Snelling and Highway 36 to the complex.

Questions – call Carole (651) 636-8249.

MVNA TOY STORY By Martha Quick, Family Health Aide

Dear Club 100: I would like to thank you for all of the great educational toys and books that I have been able to provide for our family’s children. Sometimes I visit homes and there is not one toy available! Research shows that early childhood stimulation improves brain development. Club 100 allows children with an economic disadvantage to have this opportunity. The toys that I have provided range from baby rattles to wooden toys, puzzles, books and board games.

Sammy is three years old. He lives with his family and extended family in a crowded apartment. Dad works during the day and cares for him at night and Mom works the night shift. Both parents are tired and are balancing difficult schedules. Sammy has serious behavior problems and an inability to concentrate; we provided him with books and a set of plastic figurine toys. I worked with him, using the toys as props. Eventually he was able to sit and listen to the stories from the books I brought. One of the books was a dry-erase, interactive book which allowed him to use a color to answer questions. He also learned to play with the figurines and used his imagination for a long time. He is making good progress.

Clarise is a two-year old; she was born prematurely to a mother whose husband had left her. Mom works in the evenings when the older children can baby-sit. Clarise was having a hard time with age-appropriate language. She would grunt instead of forming words when she needed help. She was given books, a wooden color-coded train and a doll. My visits to the family were special “playtime” visits. She sat quietly and loved the stories that I read to her; we played with the train and I encouraged her to repeat the colors; we worked on naming emotions and feelings when we played with the doll.

My time with the children is also a time of teaching parenting behavior to mom and dad. Club 100’s gifts of books and toys have allowed these two children and many more to engage in activities that stimulate their imagination, influence their fine and gross motor skills, improve their language, emotional well-being and much more. Thank you for donating these gifts to improve the lives of these children. The simple gift of a toy can significantly improve a child’s future!!
