Now is the time to contact your friends and family to invite them to the event and make sure they can get it on their calendars. Before you know it January 20th will be here – after all, there was snow this past week in Northern Minnesota! Start getting silent auction items. Lois has graciously agreed to chair the committee and she has confirmed that Kanes Katering will once again be providing us with delicious meal for the event. Tickets will be $35, which will just cover our costs. It will be held on Friday, January 20th at the History Theatre in St. Paul – performance of Bandaids, Candlesticks and Johnny Unitus – three plays written by Minnesota writers. Grim statistics on world's poor youth show millions at risk - UN report 4 October 2005 - More than 500 million youths worldwide live on less than $2 a day, 113 million are not in school, 88 million are unemployed and 10 million have HIV/AIDS, all significant challenges for reaching the 2015 goals of reducing poverty by half, increasing literacy, and improving the health of people around the world, a United Nations report released today says. Amid this grim picture portrayed in the World Youth Report 2005, there are positive signs. Since 1995, the number of children completing primary school has continued to increase, while the current generation is the best educated in history. Premarital sexual relations appear to be increasing, according to the report, but early pregnancy has declined in many countries. HIV/AIDS is the primary cause of death, followed by violence and injuries. Youth have been disproportionately involved in conflicts over the past decade, and legal protections have not been enforced. The report was published just two days ahead of a daylong General Assembly session devoted to the issue of youth. Nearly 48 young delegates from two dozen countries are registered to attend, as well as 300 youth organizations. Speaking to reporters at a press briefing held in conjunction with the report's release, Johan Scholvinck, Director for Social Policy and Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), said, "The year 2015 is the year when we are supposed to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but large numbers of youth live in poverty." He told to an audience of mostly young delegates attending the briefing that action taken now will benefit not only them but also children who will grow to be youths in 10 years. "You should not be talked down to, like I am doing," he said, "but should be participants in your own future." Nguyen Hong Nhung, a student leader and freelance journalist from Vietnam who also spoke at the briefing said that the upcoming plenary sessions represented an "opportunity to raise our voices, and to understand that youth are now very important."

UNICEF: The children of Iraq have been caught up in war for the third time in 20 years. Although a clear picture of the impact of the fighting on civilians has yet to emerge, UNICEF is deeply concerned by the deteriorating conditions facing children in the country. Almost half of Iraq’s total population is aged under 18. Even before the conflict began, many children were highly vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. One in four children aged under five is chronically malnourished. One in eight die before their fifth birthday. Overcoming extraordinarily difficult circumstances, UNICEF staff are working now to help meet the needs of Iraq’s children. Since the end of the war, UNICEF has delivered thousands of tons of supplies. These include emergency medical and water supplies, as well as high-protein food for malnourished children and medicines targeting serious outbreaks of water-borne diseases among children. UNICEF tankers have supplied tens of millions of litres of water to southern Iraq, repaired water treatment plants, and supplied millions of dollars worth of water treatment chemicals. Iraq's situation is unique in many ways. An eight-year war with Iran in the 1980s and the Gulf War in 1991 greatly damaged Iraq's infrastructure. The country was under comprehensive United Nations sanctions for 12 years. However, the Oil for Food Program (OFFP), passed by the Security Council in late 1996, did help to reduce the impact of sanctions on the population by allowing the Iraqi government to sell oil and use the revenue to purchase humanitarian supplies. On 22 May, 2003, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1483 lifting civilian sanctions on Iraq and phasing out the Oil-for-Food Program over the next six months. UNICEF has been working to improve the situation of children and women in Iraq since 1952 and has had a permanent presence in the country since 1983. It plays a leading role in helping to fulfil the fundamental rights of children and women, working in the areas of education, health, nutrition, water and environmental sanitation, child protection and women’s rights. UNICEF has issued a $182.7 million appeal for the children of Iraq.

Trafficking in women and girls for sexual exploitation: Lifetime Television for Women – Article from Zonta International website: Trafficking in women and girls for sexual exploitation is a lucrative global industry involving millions of dollars and thousands of damaged lives. Trafficked women and girls report repeated violent rapes, unplanned pregnancies, beatings, torture and other sexual abuse by clients and traffickers, as well as serious reproductive health illnesses. Traffickers are able to sell women and girls over and over again, unlike drugs and weapons, and make millions of dollars with relatively little risk of being charged with a crime. Many of us have no idea that human trafficking is happening in our own countries. Most of us would be shocked to find out it happens in our very own communities. Human trafficking is a $9.5 billion a year business. The U.S. government estimates, each year, up to 800,000 people are taken from their homes and families and forced across international borders. Millions are trafficked within their own countries. 80% are women and girls. Nearly 20,000 people are trafficked into the United States alone each year. The UN Population Fund estimates that globally 2 million girls between the ages of 5 and 15 years are trafficked, sold or coerced into prostitution annually. We know that we have to address trafficking to realize a world where all women and girls are free from violence. Since 2002, Zonta International has supported the STAR Network Anti-Trafficking Community Mobilization project in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2002, Zonta adopted a Resolution on Trafficking. Zonta Clubs around the world are participating in efforts to raise awareness and prevent trafficking. Read about the Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva, Florida, USA project. And now, Zonta International is teaming up with Lifetime Television to make it easier for US Clubs to get involved. US-based Lifetime Television is drawing attention to this crime through a two-part original miniseries, Human Trafficking, airing Monday, 24 October and Tuesday, 25 October (9 p.m. ET/PT). Lifetime developed the series using research from top organizations that work on the issue. Mira Sorvino, Academy Award® and Golden Globe®-winning actress stars in the series with two-time Golden Globe® and Emmy Award® winner Donald Sutherland, and Robert Carlyle. In conjunction with the series, Lifetime developed public education materials and has included Zonta International among “the many heroes working to combat human trafficking at home and around the world.” |
