PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

Fall has always been my favorite season of the year. To some, it is the harbinger of the winter to come, but not for me…. I love the more comfortable temperatures, the leaves which are beginning to turn into beautiful, warm and bright oranges, yellows and reds, the freshly harvested apples which make warm delicious apple pies smothered with vanilla ice cream, and going to the Farmers Market for one-last chance to enjoy natures best selection of the many winter varieties of squash.

When I was a child, my mother would buy those gigantic Hubbard squash. Barely able to carry these giant green wart-like monsters, I would nonetheless lug them over to the cutting stump (the stump used to split wood). I somehow managed to get the squash onto the stump and then carefully moved a safe distance from the hapless squash and stump. My dad would take a large wooden axe, heave it towards the squash and split the squash into several pieces that would fit in a pan. Years later, when I was on my own, I bought a small Hubbard squash. I tried valiantly to cut it into manageable pieces, but my attempt with the butcher knife was completely futile and in a last ditch effort to crack the squash, I threw it off my second story deck, hoping that it would somehow open up once it hit the ground. I have never purchased a whole Hubbard since, instead opting for the more easily manageable butternut, turban, buttercup, and acorn.

My mom would bake the squash until it was fully cooked, filling the kitchen with delicious aromas of the squash, and mingled with the slow baking of a pork roast. We would enjoy the fruits of our labors that evening with roast pork, potatoes and gravy and an ample serving of the squash, sweetened with brown sugar and butter. The leftover squash was then frozen for us to enjoy during the cold winter months to come.

Back to the present:

There were 15 of us at our September event, which was the Pompeii exhibit at the Science Museum.

Thanks to Judy, who was able to get our tickets for the group price! We enjoyed dinner at George’s on Plato (formerly Awada’s on Plato) and then made a mad dash to our cars in the driving rain storm! We learned a lot about the lives of the people who lived in Pompeii at the time of the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

Our next event will be Tuesday, October 23rd. We will be meeting at Macy’s River Room in St. Paul for dinner and then going to the Park Square Theater to see Agnes of God. Romelle has reserved a block of 15 seats for us at the theater, and you will need to contact her to tell her if you are going to be able to attend. This will also be another great opportunity to invite family and friends.

The year to date financial report is being included in this month’s newsletter to members. Since we are meeting in a less formal setting, this report will bring you up-to-date. Let me know if you have any questions.

We have invited the St. Paul BPW (Business & Professional Women/USA - St. Paul Chapter)to join us at the October and November events. In their most recent newsletter, there was a section entitled “More things to ponder...” – here are a few of those things! “Is it my imagination, or do buffalo wings taste like chicken?” – “If money doesn’t grow in trees, then why do banks have branches?” – “Since bread is square, why is sandwich meat round?” – “Why does a round pizza come in a square box?” - and, “What is another word for Thesaurus?”

The district conference is this weekend – October 5-7th. Carole, Romelle and Shirley will be attending from our club.

Our service project will be November 27th at Carole’s party room. We will be making tie fleece blankets for young mothers and children. We have some fleece left from our last service project and I went to JoAnn Fabrics and purchased some more fabric. I currently have enough fleece to make 15 blankets. If anyone has leftover fleece from our last project, please bring it to the November session. Bring scissors. We haven’t finalized the food for the event as of this time. More information will come in the November newsletter. This is another event we can all invite friends and families to come join us.

Enjoy October – see you all on the 23,rd!

District 7 Fall Conference Update:

District 7 fall conference will be held the first weekend in October at Minneapolis, MN. The conference information was included with your August newsletter. Carole Snyder will be our delegate at the conference.

United Nations Day:

October 24th is United Nations Day -
these are some of the activities that
Zonta International
recommends that we participate in.

  1. The club observes United Nations Day (October 24) by having a function.
  2. A program on United Nations was presented at a club meeting.
  3. The club studied a country that is a member of the United Nations.

Zonta International and the United Nations

October is United Nations month – here is Information from Zonta International Web Site:

Zonta International service has been closely linked with the United Nations since Zonta expressed support for the fledgling UN in 1946. As an international non-governmental organization (NGO), Zonta brings women's concerns to the UN, suggests solutions, draws public attention to issues and encourages its members to participate at the local level.

Zonta maintains representatives of its United Nations Committee at UN sites in Geneva, New York, Paris and Vienna. Committee members attend UN conferences, and UN agency, committee and commission sessions.

Accredited NGOs, like Zonta, participate in these sessions by providing written statements and oral presentations on issues being considered. NGOs also may organize panels relating to the general debate.

UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Since 1985, Zonta has had general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of six principal bodies carrying out UN work.

ECOSOC is responsible for two-thirds of UN programs, in particular, those concerned with economic issues such as trade, industrialization and development, as well as social issues such as women’s rights, children and social welfare. ECOSOC makes recommendations on how to improve education and health conditions and to promote respect for and observance of the human rights and freedoms of people everywhere.

Commission on the Status of Women

One of nine functional ECOSOC committees, the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the leading policymaking body concerned with women's rights and the equal status of women. Since 1946, the CSW has convened an annual conference, now attended by thousands of women worldwide, to discuss issues of paramount concern for women.

Department of Public Information

Zonta is one of many NGOs associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information because of its strong programs on issues of concern to women. The UN provides NGOs access to information and materials and the NGOs agree to disseminate information to their membership.

UN Committee Activity

Seven out of ten of the world’s hungry are women and girls, according to the UN World Food Program. When women are afforded the equality of opportunity that is their basic human right, the results in terms of economic advancement are striking (UNIFEM and Women’s Funding Network). On 16 and 17 October, Zonta members have an opportunity to stand up and speak out about the feminization of poverty by participating in the Millennium Campaign worldwide event.

Service News

Jeremiah Program in St. Paul is now open!

Five single mothers and their children moved into their new apartments in early September. The program’s new St. Paul campus is at 932 Condordia Avenue. There will eventually be 38 families. The program offers low-income single mothers of young children (under the age of 5) a safe and affordable place to live while the mothers work part-time jobs and go to school to complete their post-secondary education. Many of the young women come from homeless shelters and halfway houses. More than 50 percent of the young women have been the victims of violence. To qualify for the program, the mothers must have a high school diploma or GED certificate. In addition to earning a post-secondary degree, the women learn skills in developing relationships, accepting responsibility for their lives and how to handle conflict.

We will be contacting them to try to set up a spring service project for us to participate in.
