SEE YOU!:

PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

Although it is only the end of August, it certainly feels like fall here in St. Paul. We couldn’t ask for more perfect weather for fair goers. Instead of rain or sweltering heat, it has been pleasantly mild. If the Park and Ride lots are any indication, the fair must be on course for a record turnout this year. Actually, the opening day did set a record for turnout – 114,439 people enjoyed the fair, with Friday coming in close to the 2004 record. Total through Saturday was 428,507. 1,693,263 attended in 2008. There are 33 park and ride locations this year.

And, if you have a valid library card, you can get discounted admission to the fair on Wednesday, September 2nd, or Seniors Day on Thursday September 3rd. Here are some well-known or little known trivia facts about the Fair:

Minnesota State Fair Trivia –

  1. What year was the first Minnesota State Fair Held?
  2. What were the fairgrounds before they were the Minnesota State Fairgrounds?
  3. When did the State Fair attendance top the 1,000,000 mark?
  4. What is the Minnesota State Fair’s all time attendance record and when was it broken?
  5. What famous composer appeared at the fair in 1927?
  6. During a typical year, how many gallons of milk are served at the American Dairy Association’s all you can drink concession?
  7. When was the Pronto Pup introduced at the State Fair?
  8. What year was the first Princess Kay of the Milky Way crowned?
  9. Approximately how many rolls of toilet paper are used during the fair?
  10. Why wasn’t there a fair in 1946?
  11. On average, what is the total number of corn dogs typically consumed by fair visitors each year?
  12. Which fair food contains the most calories?
  13. What is the oldest ride on the fairgrounds?
  14. How much butter is used to sculpt the likeness of Princess Kay of the Milky Way?
Thanks to all of you who attended and helped make the President’s dinner a big success. We had 19 attendees, which is wonderful! Lots of good food, good conversation and good friends. Michelle Lichtig from MVNA and her volunteer coordinator, Peggy Custard, gave a presentation on what MVNA does for the community and showed us their “Yummy Kit”. I still marvel at all the things they were able to stuff into that Zip Lock baggie and still get it closed. Those two must be fabulous suitcase packers!

It was fun getting to reunite with former Zontians Erma, Phyllis and Beth and to meet a new guest, Robin. We are so glad you were all able to come and join us and hope you will join us for future events and meetings.

September 12, 2009 Meeting (Saturday): This newsletter is coming out earlier than usual since our next meeting date is Saturday, September 12th and will be held at MVNA offices just off Broadway and Industrial Boulevard. The address is 3433 Broadway Street NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413. We will be joined by members of Altrusa in putting together the Yummy Kits.

The meeting will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. MVNA will provide juice, coffee and cups. We will need to bring rolls, coffee cake, for our group.

The meeting will begin with a welcome by MVNA, then a brief introduction of attendees (Altrusa and Zonta members), a brief overview of Altrusa and Zonta, and then preparation of the Yummy kits.

Altrusa is a community based, grassroots organization that seeks to solve the problems in our back yards. Altrusans raise money for local charities, volunteer at battered women’s shelters, help runaway teens, build houses for Habitat for Humanity and much more. There are three Altrusa chapters in Minnesota – Duluth, Moorhead and St. Paul.

We will purchase the yummy kit items for the meeting. If you are able to locate items at a reasonable cost, please bring them to the meeting. We can always return any items which are duplicates if necessary.

We will not need to make reservations for the September event, but if members could let Judy or me know if they plan on attending, it would be greatly appreciated so that we can let Michelle at MVNA know how many to expect.

We will have lunch following the meeting which will be at your own cost. Some suggestions for lunch include Manning’s Café (2200 Como Avenue SE, Minneapolis MN), Chianti Grill (near Har-Mar); D’Amico and Partners (near Har-Mar); Muffaletta’s (on Como, just east of 280); Axel’s (on Cleveland, just south of County Road C in Roseville; Good Earth or Applebee’s (on frontage Road in Roseville north of Highway 36); the Olive Garden (Roseville near Snelling and County Road C); Café Biaggio (2356 University Avenue West, St. Paul); and Jay’s Café (791 Raymond Avenue, St. Paul, MN). If anyone has any other ideas, please bring them with, as we will decide on the 12th where we would like to go for lunch.

Peggy

Their new web site is Minnesota Business Women if you would like more information. If you are interested in attending the September meeting, contact Connie at 651-270-9144.

District Fall Conference:

The district conference will be held in St. Charles, Missouri September 18-20 at the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa. The district website indicated more information will be forthcoming and sure enough - I received the call to conference information in the mail today (August 31st). The conference is entitled “Navigating the Waters of Change: From Local Service to Global Awareness”.

The registration fee was $149 if received by August 30th, but since we have passed that deadline, the fee is $170. It includes dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday (including a gala dinner) and breakfast on Sunday. Lodging is available for $169 for Friday night at the Casino hotel and $199 for Saturday night. Rates increase for the hotel after August 30th. I checked on the Hotel’s website and there was no availability for Friday night. There is a possibility that Zonta has held some rooms for members. There is free parking for all hotel guests.

The conference will conduct the District’s 2009 fall business including budget, financial statements, dues, proposed Zonta International Bylaws Change (info follows), Resolutions, Awards and Workshops

Friday’s guest speaker will be Claudia Daniels from Edge Outreach, an organization whose mission is empowering women with clean water and micro-business programs. Saturday’s speaker is Dayna Stock, Manager of Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life at the U of Missouri and her speech will be entitled “Navigating Through Political Waters”.

There will be four breakout sessions from which attendees can select two, including topics of PR, Member Rejuvenation, Navigating on the Internet and a business panel discussion in addition to business sessions.

The Saturday night gala will feature Wally Funk, one of the original Mercury 13 women, tested for the astronaut program in the 1960’s. Guest tickets will be $50. Registrants have this event included in the registration fee.

Registration:

The information is fairly late in getting out to members (not quite 3 weeks away), so if anyone has an interest in attending, contact the St. Charles Zonta Club directly at St. Charles Zonta Club

or Brenda Fraser at 636-398-6705.

The International Day of Peace – What is it???

The International Day of Peace occurs annually on September 21. It is dedicated to peace, or specifically the absence of war, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone. It is observed by many nations, political groups, military groups, and peoples.

To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at UN Headquarters. The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents. It was given as a gift by the Diet of Japan, and is referred to as "a reminder of the human cost of war." The inscription on its side reads: "Long live absolute world peace."

The United Nations General Assembly declared, in a resolution sponsored by Costa Rica, that the 3rd Tuesday of September would be the International Day of Peace devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace. Later, the date was fixed on September 21st. Since that time, there have been various declarations of peace, including calling for a 24 hour cessation of hostilities around the world on this day.

Today, there seems to be even a greater need for peace, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, the Middle East, and the list goes on and on.

Exactly what is Peace? It is a term that refers to an absence of hostility, but also means that there are healthy or newly-healed interpersonal or international relationships, economic security or social welfare safety, equality and fairness in political relationships, and an absence of war or conflict. Causes of conflict and absence of peace include insecurity, social injustice, economic inequality, political and religious radicalism and acute nationalism.

Buddhists believe that peace can be achieved once all suffering ends. Inner peace, or peace of mind, refers to a state of being mentally and spiritually at peace. Freedom from the effects of stress results in peace of mind, serenity and calmness.

The United Nations is an international organization which strives to facilitate cooperation in international law, security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achieving world peace.

NYFS has a “Peace Pole” at their front entrance, which displays the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in several different languages. The message is referred to as a peace prayer. Since the first Peace Pole was erected, there have been more than 300,000 placed around the world, in 180 countries.
